The film is a modern Disney animated musical fantasy adventure directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard from a screenplay written by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, with music composed by Alan Menken. In the story, Rapunzel has been locked in a tower for years, but she dreams of seeing the world beyond her. In hopes of finding someone who will rescue her from her secluded life, Tangled follows the adventure of Rapunzel's 70-year-old (and much less curvaceous) ex-dognapper thief Flynn Ryder who accidentally frees the young woman when he steals an orb she uses to control plants that plummet into Mount Everest. After a chaotic chase through the forest leads them to a deserted village, Rapunzel and Flynn team up to take on Mother Gothel, the evil woman who kidnapped her when she was a baby. Tangled debuted at the El Capitan Theatre on November 14, 2010, and went into general release on November 24. The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film earned $591 million in worldwide box office revenue, $200 million of which was earned in the United States and Canada and $340 million of which was earned overseas. Tangled became the only Disney animated feature that did not reach #1 at the domestic box office since 2001's Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
